Costume Design – Saturday Night and Sunday Morning

Brenda:I have chosen to dress Brenda in quite plain clothing to show that she is slightly older. It also shows that unlike Doreen she doesn't have her own money to spend on her appearance. I have dressed her in a red cardigan to make her stand out from the other woman, I tried not to make her look too frumpy because I think that Arthur would be influence by appearance and therefore there needs to be a reason that he is attracted to her.

I have clothed Arthur in a suit that is very box shaped. His trousers are held up with a belt and have one pleat that turns out. I have also added a costume change of overalls for the scene in the factory. With such quick scene changes he will be able to pull the overall on over his suit.

I chose to group these three together as they are all in working clothing. They are also the roles I would put together if the play is multirolling.

I have found it really hard to make the men look as old as they should. I think this is becase i have drawn them too small so cannot put enough detail in their faces.

Doreen: This is my design for Doreen. She is dressed much more sophisticatdly than the other woman, even though she does work, she only appears in the play in the evenings. I chose to dress her in a fashionable style dress in a colourful patterned fabric to show that she is younger than Doreen and is different to the other women in the play. I think the slick shape of her dress and the tidy hair shows her sharp personality and gives the audience a clear understanding of why Arthur is attracted to her. I have also designed her Wedding dress. It is very simple and similar shape to the other dress. This is because I want it to be quite subtle when she enters at the end of the play so the focus is on Arthur.
